NAIDOC Week Celebrations
Due to NAIDOC Week occurring during the school holidays (2-9 July), St Mary’s celebrates NAIDOC Week during the first weeks of Term 3, with students having the opportunity to learn, appreciate, and honour the cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.
This year’s NAIDOC theme ‘For Our Elders’ celebrates and pays respect to all Elders, honouring the important role they play as cultural knowledge holders and leaders in our community. Classes are exploring this theme in a variety of ways and participating in a range of activities focusing on First Nations Peoples. At 10am on Monday we will hold a short NAIDOC prayer service on the bank of the river at Albert Stewart Park.Yuin Banaan
Next Friday 4 August our South Coast K-12 Pathway schools will be holding a Yuin Banaan Cultural Day at Captain Oldrey Park, Broulee for all Aboriginal students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and some of their invited friends.
A range of activities will be facilitated by Year 10 students from Carroll College and members of the Aboriginal community including art, dance, ochre face painting, damper making, ball games and a bush tucker walk with Trish Ellis. We thank NIAA for the grant we received from them to support the day, as well as community groups who have generously accepted our invitation to attend.
Book Week 2023
The theme for Children's Book Week this year is READ GROW INSPIRE. Watch the CBCA Book Week 2023 theme announcement, featuring this year’s feature artist, Matt Ottley.
Book Parade
On Wednesday, 23 August we will be holding our Book Parade. Students will be invited to let their imaginations run wild and celebrate their favourite literary characters in costume. This is always a fun event for the kids and costumes in previous years have been quite amazing. So put your thinking caps on and start preparing now.
Back by popular demand…we will be running a book swap again this year. Between now and 23 August, it's time to clear out your bookshelves and make some space for some new literary gems. Students can begin to bring in their preloved books so we can get ready for the day. Please only send in books that are in a reasonable/good condition. Keep an eye on class memos for more information.
God bless and take care,
