Dear Parents and Carers
What a term it has been! We’ve shared many highlights, from excursions to the Swimming and Cross Country Carnival, the Welcome Barbeque and Disco, and our Easter celebrations—not to mention the wonderful learning happening across all year levels.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our families for the many ways you have supported St Mary’s this term. Your involvement and encouragement make a real difference in our school community. Thank you also goes to the incredible staff of St Mary’s. Your dedication, hard work, and commitment to teaching do not go unnoticed. We are so fortunate to have a team that consistently goes above and beyond for our students.
Finally, to our students—thank you for your
enthusiasm, effort, and commitment to learning. Each week, as I visit classrooms, I am inspired by your engagement and willingness to grow. Just last week, I was speaking with a couple of Year 4 students about their day. When I asked how it had been, they both responded, “Great!” Curious, I asked what had made it so good. One student shared how much they had learned that morning, while the other spoke about how much they were enjoying Spelling Mastery. Moments like these truly highlight the joy of learning at St Mary’s.
It is our students who make our school such a special place! I feel incredibly blessed to be part of the St Mary’s community and look forward to all that Term 2 will bring.
On Tuesday we celebrated the Combined Schools’ Mass with Carroll College and St Bernard’s Primary School Batemans Bay. In the Year of Pilgrims of Hope, it was lovely to celebrate 30 years for the College and share in the growth of our students as they transition from Primary School to Secondary School. I congratulate the staff and students at Carroll College, St Bernard’s and St Mary’s for their coordination of the Mass. A great week of celebration for our K-12 schools!

Prayers
We continue to keep Mrs Sue Heffernan in our prayers following the loss of her father and we keep Mr Matt Harpley in our prayers following his dad passing away this week.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and may perpetual light shine upon him. May Laurence rest in peace.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
Congratulations to all our students receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, next Thursday 10 April. This is an important part of each students’ faith journey as they are strengthening their relationship with God. Fr George will lead the students through the Sacrament at 5.00pm at Sacred Heart Church. It is our Catholic identity that unites us. I warmly invite all families to join with us in celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Special thanks to all involved in preparing the children to receive this Sacrament, especially Mrs Ziegler, Mrs Durnan and Mrs Afflick.
Communication
Parents and community members play a vital role in our students' education. Open communication serves as a bridge to engagement, strengthening the partnership between home and school. Effective communication is a shared responsibility, and we encourage parents to stay informed and keep teachers updated on any relevant information about their child’s learning.
If you have any questions, concerns, or updates to share, we encourage you to email your child's teacher as the first point of contact. Your insights are important, and we look forward to working together to support your child’s academic growth. If a meeting is needed, please reach out via email, and your child's teacher will arrange a suitable time.
Please note that teachers are unable to respond to emails during the school day while they are teaching. For urgent matters, please contact the front office at (44742 817).
Exciting News: Our Library is Moving!
We are thrilled to share that our school library is moving to a bigger and better space! This new location will allow us to offer an even richer learning environment, with more room for books, reading areas, and engaging activities for our students.
As part of this move, we are also expanding our collection of books, ensuring even more wonderful reading opportunities for our students. From Term 2, all students will have the opportunity to visit the Library every Friday. In addition, the library will be open on some lunchtimes as a quiet and welcoming space for students to enjoy.
We are working hard to ensure everything is ready for the start of the new term, and we can’t wait for our students to experience their new library. Please see below some photos of how our new library is progressing!

We look forward to sharing this exciting new space with our school community soon!
Bus Travel
For students who catch the bus, we ask parents to continue reinforcing positive behaviour expectations. It is important that all St Mary’s students follow our school rules while on the bus. This ensures the safety of everyone on board, including the driver. As representatives of St Mary’s in the wider community, our students’ respectful behaviour makes a real difference. Thank you for your support in encouraging safe and considerate bus travel.

Year 3 Reconciliation Retreat
Last Wednesday, Year 3 headed out to Carroll College to join their peers from St Bernard's for a Reconciliation Retreat Day.
There was very much excitement on the bus ride out to Broulee and the boys and girls were very happy to get to say hello to many of their friends, older siblings and even some of their old Year 6 Buddies once we arrived.
During the day the students worked through a variety of activities aimed at deepening their understanding of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. They were asked to reflect on the meaning of forgiveness and its link to Scripture , in particular The Lost Sheep and The Prodigal Son. The events of the day were led by the Year 9 and 10 Youth Ministry students. There were many fun games played, as well as prayer responses, role play, artwork and activities looking at scripture and how we can be more forgiving in our own lives.
Students enjoyed a hotdog and ice block for lunch and we finished the day with Fr George sharing a special prayer and blessing of the First Reconciliation candidates. We thank Carroll College for hosting a wonderful day out for our students.
I liked completing all the activities in the booklet. It made me think about how God is with us always. Evie
I enjoyed meeting Father George and Carroll College friends and teachers. Evan
It was so fun meeting new friends from St Bernards. Amelia
My favourite part of the day was going into groups and doing different activities, my favourite was acting out the scenarios of apologising. Quinn
Combined Schools Mass
What a wonderful and inspiring occasion! Our K-12 Combined Schools Mass was a truly special celebration of 30 years of faith, learning, and community. Gathering under the theme "Anchored in Hope," we reflected on our shared journey, gave thanks for our blessings, and looked forward with renewed faith.
The theme “Anchored in Hope” served as a reminder that in times of challenge and change, it is our faith that holds us steady, just as an anchor secures a ship in turbulent waters.
We came together in prayer to celebrate two significant milestones. Firstly, we joined the global Church in the Jubilee Year and secondly, we gave thanks for 30 years of K-12 Catholic education in our region with the formation of Carroll College Broulee.
The beautiful Mass, uplifting music, and the strong sense of unity among our students, staff, and families make this a truly special event each time. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making the celebration so meaningful.
In particular we extend our gratitude to Fr George and also Carroll College for their wonderful hospitality. The students were delighted to receive their special Easter snack packs after the Mass. May we continue to remain anchored in hope as we journey forward together!

Sacrament of First Reconciliation
This Thursday 10 April, six of our Year 3 students will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. The celebration will take place in the Church at 5:00pm. We will keep these students in our prayers over the coming week as they continue to prepare for this very special celebration.

Family Parish Mass
It was wonderful to welcome so many students and families to our Family Mass last Saturday evening. Thank you to all those who came along and participated - as altar servers, readers, choir members and in the offertory procession. Your involvement made the celebration even more special. We hope to hold a Family Mass every term and will share the date for the next Mass once it is confirmed.

Easter Liturgy
Families and friends are invited to join us for our Easter Liturgy on Wednesday 9 April at 9:00am in the PAC. Our Year 4 students will be sharing the story of Easter, and we look forward to coming together as a community to celebrate this special occasion in the Church calendar.
Easter Mufti Day
On Thursday 10 April students have the opportunity to wear Mufti with a hint of Easter for the last day of term for students. Students are encourage to bring in a gold coin which will go towards Project Compassion to assist those less fortunate than us this Easter.
Palm Sunday
We warmly welcome all families and friends to our Palm Sunday Parish Mass on Saturday 12 April at 5.00pm. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and Jesus’ triumphant ride through Jerusalem. It would be wonderful if as many students as possible could be present to participate in parts of the Mass. Palms for the Entrance Procession will be given to the children on arrival at the Church at 4.45pm. If you are able to attend, can you please email jo.wain@cg.catholic.edu.au.
ANZAC Day
On Friday 25th April, St Mary’s will participate in ANZAC Day ceremonies in the local area. We join with others to show unity and support for those men and women who have served and made sacrifices for our country. ANZAC Day provides an opportunity for our students to better understand this aspect of our history and participate in a very important event in our community. St Mary’s will be represented at the Tuross Dawn Service, Tomakin Dawn Service and Moruya March and Service. We invite students and families to join us at one of these services in school uniform to represent St Mary’s.
Condolences
We extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to Mr Matt Harpley, Robyn, Millie and Tessa (Year 6) following the passing of Matt’s father this week. Our thoughts are also with Mrs Sue Heffernan as she mourns the recent loss of her father. May they find comfort in the love and support of our community.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)
Dear Lord,
We pray that in this time of loss,
You'll feel God's love much more
And that you'll find your comfort
In the presence of the Lord
We pray God pours upon you,
His sweet amazing grace
And overflow your heart with peace
As you live in His embrace.
Amen

Dear Parents and Carers
ANZAC Day 2025
Each year St Mary’s students, families and staff attend the numerous ANZAC Day ceremonies across the region on 25 April. This year ANZAC Day falls within our school holidays. Students who are able to attend the ceremonies are encouraged to wear their school uniform, stand or march together. Our representatives will be able to lay a wreath organised by the school. At Tuross Dawn service students are asked to meet Mrs Durnan, for the Moruya march students are asked to meet Mrs Wain and Mrs Afflick 15 minutes before the march near the rotunda, and at Broulee students are asked to meet Mrs Brady and Mrs Hampson near the Rivermouth Café at 6.30am.
Mayors Writing Competition
Every year, students across the Eurobodalla are asked to write an original story as part of the Mayor’s Writing Competition. In classes students will have the opportunity to use one of their pieces of writing they have been working on to submit as part of this competition. This year’s theme is ‘Friendship.’ We know that our students will love the opportunity to share their writing with others, and they may also want to work on their own entry at home over the holiday break as well.
Little Basil Sellers Art Competition
Aspiring school-aged artists from Eurobodalla are invited to enter the Little Sellers Art Prize 2025 for a chance to win great prizes and have their work included in an exhibition in the Bas. In the past we have had a few recipients of this opportunity where they have had their work on display in the Basil Sellers Art Gallery attached to the town library. This year’s theme is ‘’To thine one self be true’ Students will be working on artworks in class as part of this, but children may want to work on this as part of a holiday project as well. The winner for each category receives a $100 voucher to art supply store Amanda’s of Mogo, and runners-up receive $50 vouchers. The overall winner of the Little Sellers Art Prize, chosen from the school year category winners, receives $500.

What’s Happening in Year 1?
It has been an exciting and action-packed Term in Year 1! Students have settled beautifully into our classroom routines, and they are working so well across all curriculum areas.
In Religious Education, students have been learning about meditative prayer, participating in daily Christian Meditation, as well as learning about ‘Dadirri’ (meaning ‘deep listening’). This is an Aboriginal form of meditation, with a focus on the natural world around us. Students have also been learning about choices, discussing right and wrong choices and evaluating the impact of our choices on our relationships with others. This week, Year 1 joined students from St Mary’s and our Pathway Schools, St Bernard’s and Carroll College, to participate in our annual Combined Catholic Schools Mass at Carroll College. It was a beautiful morning and Year 1 are to be commended on their participation and respectful behaviour throughout the Mass and the ensuing morning tea.

In English, students have been learning about the structure of simple and compound sentences. Students have been applying their learning to compose sentences containing a ‘who?’ (a subject) and a ‘what doing?’ (a verb predicate). Students have then been encouraged to expand their sentences by adding a when or where detail, an adjective (a describing word), or a conjunction (a joining word). Students take great delight in drafting their sentences on whiteboards before publishing their edited work into their lined writing books.

Mathematics lessons have seen some very clever work produced, with students using number bonds to complete addition and subtraction equations. Students have also been learning about the properties of 2D shapes and the workings of analogue clocks through participation in daily review, explicit lessons and independent practice.

Geography lessons have been designed to explore various habitats. Students were highly engaged in their lesson on water habitats, in which Mr Nolan taught us the dhurga names for several local sea creatures. Yr 1 also enjoyed creating a camping plan for the Three Bears!

We have been studying Biology in Science, with a particularly memorable lesson on ‘tardigrades’. Students enjoyed making a tardigrade model out of playdough!

PDHPE lessons are always a favourite in Year 1. Students have been learning about water safety with Mr Hill, as well as participating in Gross Motor rotations each Friday. Each session students are asked to put one of our four school rules into action as they participate in the activities.
Last Friday was met with much excitement as Year 1 braved the elements to complete their cross country run at Gundary Oval. Congratulations to all our competitors!

Finally, in Creative and Performing Arts, students have enjoyed participating in imaginative play scenarios with Ms Shannon, as well as producing some very impressive artworks using a variety of media during Visual Arts lessons each Thursday.

We are looking forward to the final week of Term 1, where Year 1 will take time to explore the traditions, teachings and craft making practices surrounding the very special time of Easter! We wish all our families a happy, safe and holy Easter break.

Sport News
Last Friday, the St Mary’s Cross Country event at Gundary Oval was a fantastic display of determination and team spirit. Every child gave their absolute best, pushing through the challenges of the new course with incredible enthusiasm. All of our runners, from Kinder to Year 6, showed their commitment to doing their personal best and supporting each other along the way. It was inspiring to see such a positive spirit and effort from everyone involved, whether they were racing for the top spot or simply enjoying the experience. The day truly highlighted the amazing teamwork and perseverance within the St Mary’s community. The new track was a welcome change and proved to be much more challenging which is great in the lead up to the next level in Wolumla.
A highlight of the day was witnessing our littlest runners persevere in the drizzling rain and run their races with the biggest of smiles. I’m not sure if they enjoyed the run or the rain more! A little bit of rain didn’t dampen their spirits at all.

Ribbons will be presented at our next school assembly to be held in the PAC on Thursday 10 April. All parents, family and friends are welcome to join us.
We have many students making it onto the next level of Cross Country early next term. Southern Region Cross Country will be held at Wolumla Sports Grounds on Friday 2 May. It is always a very tricky course, with some big hills and muddy creeks in parts. Parents and families are invited to walk the course at 10.30am before races start not long after. More information and details have been communicated via COMPASS.

CECG Sports Trials
Netball
Last Thursday, Matilda W travelled to Canberra to participate in the CECG Netball trials. This was one of the biggest netball trials in a long time with over 70 students attending, all vying for a spot in the Canberra Goulburn team. Matilda joined with some other students from representative teams and St Bernard’s. Matilda played in some incredibly tough games, showing off her well developed skills in the game.
Matilda W: ‘I had a great day at the Netball trials. I met some new people and it was good that I got to play with my friend Gigi. It was the first time I had played on an indoor netball court which was fun. I made it into the possible and probable team which I was happy about’.
Rugby League
On Monday, many of our boys in Years 5 and 6 also travelled to Canberra to trial for a position in the Canberra Goulburn Rugby League teams. These trials are highly popular and are a highlight on the school sport calendar for many of our boys in Stage 3. Congratulations to Ollie A, Sam W, Xave E, Tane M, Beau Mc, Hugo D, Lewis Mc.
In exciting news, we congratulate Xavier E and Beau Mc on their selection into the CECG 11 years Rugby League Team. The boys are looking forward to playing against other diocese teams next term.
Xave, Tane, Ollie, Sam, Beau, Hugo and Lewis: ‘It was good, we all had a great day. Everyone gave it a good go and we were challenged by kids from other teams who played well too.We really had to work as a team even though we didn’t know the other players but it was a great experience.
Soccer Trials
Next Monday, we have 4 students trialling for the CECG soccer trials. We wish all the very best of luck to Andre L, Tommy D, Nicholas A and Mackenzie H and I look forward to sharing their results with you in the next newsletter.
